Four Corners, the print management company that has seen its turnover grow from nothing to over £1.2m in under three years, is now putting its mark on Brighton in an entirely different way.
By sponsoring the Brighton Ultimate Club, a team of Frisbee-playing enthusiasts, with some new performance playing kit, it seems Four Corners has brought some luck to this game of skill. In the past four months, the Brighton Ultimate Club has won the Indoor Championships in Bath against the 16 best indoor teams in the country and they now hold the title of Indoor UK Champions. They recently came third in the Mixed Nationals held in Southampton against 22 other national teams and have just completed the outdoor A-tour (the Frisbee equivalent to the Premier League), and can now boast being sixth in the country out of the top 45 teams! All that and this is only the second year that the Brighton Ultimate Club has been playing competitively. These fantastic results in such a short space of time show dedication and determination. The male and female players come from all walks of life and include students (undergraduates and post-graduates), teachers, plumbers, helicopter pilots, engineers, musicians, youth workers, civil servants, travel agents, unemployed and computer programmers – all united by their love of this very addictive game. While there are seven players on the field at any one time in each team these can be substituted as often as necessary as it’s a very fast, tiring game, and the ideal number to take to a tournament for each team is around 16. Four Corners has treated the club to 50 new kit tops made from Aquaduct, a revolutionary performance fabric which keeps you dry, making it one of the best outdoor and sports fabrics in the world. Each comes complete with the Brighton Ultimate Club’s pavilion logo on the front and Four Corners’ logo on the back along with player’s number.
Ultimate Frisbee is unique in that it is refereed by the players themselves, even at World Championship level, according to a code of conduct known as “the Spirit of the Game”. This places the responsibility for fair play on the players themselves. In that respect, playing Ultimate Frisbee is a completely different experience to playing any other sports. This system of self-refereeing works beautifully. It is this ethos of fair play that appealed to Four Corners Director Lena Johansson who said, “There is something comforting about watching a Frisbee match, no lost tempers or foot stamping just skilled, fast, accurate and enjoyable! A bit like us really…” The Brighton Ultimate Club would like to encourage as many people as possible to join in and play. Anyone who would like to give it a try should go to Preston Park on Tuesdays at 6.30pm and ask for Tom or Waggle. For further information, please contact: Nathalie Tesson – 01273 503 304
